Truman Memorial Building Restoration
Independence, Missouri
Originally constructed in 1926Truman Memorial Building is located in the heart of the historic district in downtown Independence, Missouri. Originally constructed in 1926, the renovation allowed the building to continue to serve as a living memorial to local war veterans, provide a multi-purpose facility including auditorium seating for up to 900 people, for resident youth and senior adult programs, showcase performing and cultural arts activities and recognize the special relationship of the building to President Harry S. Truman. Many character defining features on the exterior of the building had deteriorated and had been removed in the past. One of the challenges of the project was to recreate the missing features such as the projecting belt courses, pediments, finials and urns, using modern materials. The character defining features on the interior were repaired and preserved, while the inaccessible and unusable basement was rehabilitated so that it could function for people of all ages. |
