Research Laboratory Complex

Dedicated May 6, 1996, the Dolph Simons Biosciences Research Laboratories adds 48,000 square feet to the Research Laboratory complex on the West Campus of the University of Kansas.

The building, housing the Higuchi Biosciences Center and some of the research laboratories of the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmacology & Toxicology, Medicinal Chemistry, contains 18 general purpose and four specialty laboratories, as well as offices, meeting rooms, interaction areas and an auditorium with 115 seats. The Simons Laboratories Building is designed like a pharmaceutical industrial facility with offices and miscellaneous nonresearch areas surrounding research corridors and laboratories on both floors.

The construction cost of $6,818,000 was partially funded by a grant from the National Cancer Institute and the University of Kansas, with the remainder of funding provided by private donations.

GLPM Architects designed the facility to meet diverse programs and safety requirements of the National Cancer Institute, the State of Kansas and the University of Kansas.

Several major site circulation and utility issues were addressed including: relocating a major campus thoroughfare, additional parking, and developing and implementing a utility infra- structure to support the new building, existing buildings and future development.
