School of Pharmacy
University of Kansas
West Campus ExpansionCreating a concept design for the West Campus expansion of the Kansas University School of Pharmacy meant organizing a large program of student, faculty, administration, and laboratory functions. The proposed 200,000 sq. ft., five level facility will house this program as well as become an extension of existing laboratory space and create a template for future expansion of the KU Campus. Student space in the new building includes classrooms, seminar rooms, and lecture halls with fixed and moveable seating. Adjacent to classrooms is an Integrated Laboratory space with a Model Pharmacy and interview rooms, a library, and a cafeteria. A five story atrium connects these student spaces to administration and faculty offices, and research laboratories Much planning went toward organizing over 50,000 sq. ft. of research laboratory space in order that it may be used for a variety of disciplines. The labs are organized into three different types. Each lab is based on an 11 ft. by 33 ft. module allowing for an open laboratory, shared equipment, and graduate assistant space, as well as other peripheral functions depending on type. Researchers have controlled access to labs while maintaining a visual connection to students and others through the atrium space |
