Two-story, folk Victorian home built in 1892

The Crawford Community Center building is a two-story, folk Victorian home built in 1892. In 2002, when the building was donated to the university, Treanor Architects was hired to conduct a feasibility study to determine how the building could accommodate programmatic needs of the KU Housing Department. In Fall of 2005, Treanor began a 3-phase renovation project. Phase 1 included removal of the 18" stone foundation walls, construction of a reinforced concrete basement and foundation system, and restoration of the exterior envelope (replacement of damaged framing, new siding, doors, windows, and roofing, and complete reconstruction of the two porches). Phase 2 was a complete renovation of the building's interior, which included minor reconfiguration of the floor plan plus new finishes, fixtures, casework, HVAC and electrical systems. Phase 3 incorporated the site development work: retaining walls, flagstone patio, exterior stairs and sidewalks, and landscaping. The house is currently used as a conference center for the KU Department of Housing staff.
