Flexibility

In close association with a team of Architects, Contractors and Developers Treanor Architects, P.A. assisted in the development of a design and construction proposal for a new Greek Village Complex for the University of Western Carolina. As the lead Design Consultant, Treanor Architects focused on the development of design characteristics and amenities, to enhance the facilities sense of community.

Three separate site designs were fully developed to provide alternatives for community, growth, services and aesthetics. The chapter houses or apartments were carefully designed to provide a common basis upon which each of the chapters could build. Unified by the common design language each of the individual chapters were given the opportunity to personalize their building or apartment to express their individuality. Those opportunities ranged from limited interior enhancements in the chapter rooms to extensive exterior pediments and landscaping. The Design Team included a Greek Life Consultant to assist in the coordination and fundraising to accommodate this high level of flexibility and customization.

The complex is designed to accommodate fluctuations in chapter size and type and to accommodate future growth in both the number and type of future buildings. With a very restricted budget the Team was able to address a challenging site while providing a high amenity to bed ratio. Amenities in each building include, dedicated chapter rooms, catering kitchens, chapter storage, and semiprivate bath facilities. Each resident suite received individualized mechanical controls and carefully planned construction to enhance sound control between public and private spaces and between the individual suites. Each of the buildings is situated such that parking is localized and plentiful.

The commons building or “clubhouse” provides opportunities for chapter or complex level interaction while acting as a welcoming front porch for the community. Clubhouse amenities include, a welcome desk, meeting rooms, laundry facilities, recreation space with gaming and television areas, a Resident Assistant workroom, and an apartment for the Complex Director.
