St. Albert the Great Science Room
Bishop Ward High School, Kansas City, KansasChemistry Classroom Reformation
Building on the success of “Extreme Makeover” television, Bishop Ward High School’s Steering Committee journeyed down the path of modernizing one classroom as a first step to invigorate alumni and friends with what could become a complete renovation of their historic 75 year old building. Options were explored, and due to a deplorable learning environment and numerous safety concerns, the chemistry classroom was selected as the area with the greatest need for reformation.
The design principles for the 1,700 square foot renovation were identified:
1. Enhance the school’s history
2. Create an energizing space for science education
3. Incorporate Catholic faith in the learning environment
4. Improve safety.
Colors and symbols were used to support the schools history, while the organic layout and special features provide an environment that encourages the students in their work. Custom tile murals of St. Albert (Patron Saint of Science) and a 1930 Periodic Table of Elements provide a connection to the Catholic faith and its historical relationship in science.
This project was made possible through the generosity of key supporters and a considerable grant from the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation.
