Wahl Hall East - KU Medical Center
University of Kansas Medical Center
Phased Laboratory RemodelThe renovation of Wahl Hall East provided for the collaborative effort of eight principal investigators. The 22,000 sq ft space contains three laboratory modules, two on the sixth floor and one on the fifth floor. These areas for research provide for the required different functional applications, but must be arranged so that 'cross over' utilization and collaboration is readily attainable, as there is no specific separation between investigators. Molecular biology, analytical biochemistry and renal tubular and glomerular function projects are concentrated on level six, whereas immuno-cytochemistry, developmental biology and zebra fish studies are concentrated on level five. The renovation of each lab module was to enable a more interdiscipliary and flexible use. Each lab included demolition to the existing structure in preparation for all new finishes. All finishes, including casework and lab benches, HVAC, fire protection, lab services and windows were replaced with more durable and efficient systems to improve the facilities life cycle. This project was phased to allow for the least disruptive schedule for ongoing research throughout the rest of the building. |
